New Year…New Road ~ Weekenders 29 December 2023 - 01 January 2024

New Year…New Road ~ Weekenders 29 December 2023 - 01 January 2024

Is it possible to start over?

Every year I would make new year resolutions only to break them within days (especially the one about cutting down my alcohol intake).

How did I get control over my life again?

I realised I couldn’t control the booze so had to cut it out completely.

I did just a day at a time, alcohol free, to start with.

Then the days became weeks, months and so on.

It is the best thing I did for myself. I said this many times throughout the days, weeks, months and years that I’ve been sober.

This road less travelled has bumps in the road occasionally but if you stick with it, learn the pitfalls, following in the footsteps of those who are travelling, all at different parts of the road, you’ll find a life after booze on this new road..new direction.

I will be here along with many others, all of us ex drunks and alcoholics. We are your scouts and can tell you what is on the trail ahead so you can be ready for any obstacles. I can tell you to come on! It is rocky and slippery but if you focus on where you place each step, you will have no trouble getting to where I am on the trail.

All of us can tell you where the potholes are, bumps in the road, and the slippery places, but we can't walk your path for you. We can only take joy as you succeed, and cheer, one and all!

Keep resolutions simple, achievable...I tells myself. Less icecream, less coffee, less brufen, less carbs, less or no...etc.

It is VERY important that I remind myself NO booze....the most simple...no complacency.

Happy Sober 2024 everyone!

We usually have a sober cyber NYE party here - I'm sure this year will be no exception

Thanks Mags, I'm IN for a sober weekend.

I'll be honest, I'll be glad to see the back of 2023 as it's been a dreadful year for myself (healthwise) and for close members of my family too. I hope things get better in 2024.

For myself, the biggest difference I can make to my health is to continue to stay sober. It really is the key to everything being so much better.

I also hope that everyone at SR can have a peaceful and prosperous 2024.

Here's to us all!

Morning Mags,

Thank you for the new thread. My new year resolutions ordinarily don't amount to much, other than the one where I had my last drink at 4:00 pm on New Years Eve 2018. It was a horrible stale pint of beer in a smelly pub and I finally surrendered saying to myself, 'Forwards, you are better than this.' Of course the effort that followed to maintain and build on this resolve was substantial but did become easier over time.

Welcome revenant, best wishes Peke, Phoenix, Robbie and DD.

Warm wishes to all. Forwards.

Thanks for the thread, Mags!!

I am really looking forward to 2024, but I must say I learned a TON in 2023. My main goals are to continue with exercise and up it a few notches. I've lost 15 pounds and it feels really great. I also want to continue to volunteer as it has been greatly rewarding, as well as look for career #2 around September of this year. I have been semi-retired for 7 months and this gap year has been fantastic, but I am looking forward to working again at something I really love after the next 9 months of continuing to work on myself, enjoy a few trips, and other down-time things I was not able to do in my career #1. SR has really been wonderful for me this year and I love checking in daily with everyone.

I don't make new year resolutions anymore. I just try every day of the year to be the best person I can be.

I'm in for the weekend!

Been up all night since I have an early medical appt and if I went to sleep I'd be sure to oversleep and miss my appt, so stayed up all night. Doing quiet chores, like changing the cat litter, dust mopping the floors, washing a load of clothes.

Taking Franny to the vet in the afternoon for a recheck from her last appt when she was found to have three stones in her bladder. Vet put her on a special food to dissolve the stones and prevent them from recurring. She's been on steroids for a month to treat the wheezing she's been doing. With the steroids she's not wheezing at all, hardly. Bringing Billie too to have her nails trimmed and have her weighed to see if all our walks, and her reduced food portions have lost any of the excess 3 lbs she gained over the summer.

, Revenant!

I like the idea of a cyber celebration….NYE used to be such a hurdle for me…is the party here or is there a separate thread? Either way, I’ll stick around for another weekend!

And thanks again to everyone for the awesome posts & mentions….you guys are the best

Edit to add: Congrats Forwards!!!
