Would you support alcohol prohibition?
Would I support it? Absolutely not. They tried that and alcoholics like me found a way to get drunk anyway.
Let's see what the book says...
Pg 103:
"We are careful never to show intolerance or hatred of drinking as an institution. Experience shows that such an attitude is not helpful to anyone. Every new alcoholic looks for this spirit among us and is immensely relieved when he finds we are not witch-burners. A spirit of intolerance might repel alcoholics whose lives could have been saved, had it not been for such stupidity. We would not even do the cause of temperate drinking any good, for not one drinker in a thousand likes to be told anything about alcohol by one who hates it."
Pg 95:
"You will be most successful with alcoholics if you do not exhibit any passion for crusade or reform."
Besides that, they say something like 80% of the people have no personal issues with alcohol, so why ruin it for make it more difficult for them?

i suffered from a spiritual malady all my life bugsworth,as i child i was spiritually sick,,i could write pages on why this was,,then when i got the booze oh boy.dosnt answer your question completely,,i would have probably just ended up in a mental institution or in prison.in a way im glad i did turn out to be alcoholic (not overjoyed that would be sadistic).it explains alot and there is a solution which i can choose to apply to my every day living.i do and boy things are great.in answer to the OP,,i dont think banning booze would be benificial in any way.i dont want others folks drinking and socialising to be ruined.i do agree with trucker though about how easy it is for kids in this country to get booze, something needs to be done about that for sure.

Char..if you choose to believe that you have a spiritual malady and that is what defines you so be it. The fact is this is not true of all alcoholics.
I do agree something needs to be done about the glorification of alcohol that is so engrained in our society.

Prohibition did not work in America, it caused more problems with organized criminals bootlegging alcohol on the black market, there was violent rivalry between criminal organizations and the alcohol was sometimes lethal.
I love booze, I would never want to see it prohibited. Why would I hate that which brought me to my creator? Why would I hate the very thing that keeps my life full and rich working with newcomers. Ever wonder why alcohol is called spirits?
I am absolutely for the immediate scheduling of alcohol as a Schedule 2 substance (right alongside cocaine) and tobacco as a Schedule 1 substance (alongside heroin, cannabis, & LSD). The financial hypocrisy enjoyed by the enablers in those two industries has gone on long enough. I cannot stand by and listen to why cannabis is illegal and a Schedule 1 substance (of all freakin' things!!), but you can advertise and eff yourself up on booze all you want! Too many people have forgotten or never learned the lessons of the first prohibition, so it's time to dust off the books.
Of course, this would do nothing to reduce actual drinking and would probably increase drinking at all ages, including minors, while adding all the troubles unregulated substances come with. School of hard knocks, i guess.
With the lessons learned, cannabis can enjoy regulated legal status alongside alcohol. This will probably reduce alcohol consumption as well as hard drug usage. I'll leave the question of legalizing harder substances until after people rid themselves of the boogie man that is cannabis. Lumping that in with heroin?! Seriously?! This is the 21st century!
At any rate, i'm all for treating alcohol as the highly addictive and dangerous substance that it is to teach people the lessons of prohibition. Enough of this pussyfooting around. Prohibition has, is, and will continue to do more harm than the substances it claims to rail against. Rant off.

Here in Australia tobacco companies
- Can't sponsor sporting events
- Can't advertise (TV/Magazines/Newspaper etc)
- Cigarettes must be kept covered up in a store if you could see them through the window
- Cig packets must contain horrific warning images: http://blogsofbainbridge.typepad.com...ning_toe_1.jpg
Considering the impact booze can have on people's lives - even non alcoholics - I would support all of the above measures being put in place for alcohol.
I know during my first few weeks of sobriety those beer ad's on TV had me drooling and it would have been great if they weren't there. I'm sure people would still buy beer even without them.
I don't support the banning of alcohol outright as for most people it's good in moderation (and because my fiancee works in the wine industry and without that we would have a lot less money )

Alcoholism does not come in bottles - it's in people.
I'm with Charmian on the spiritual problem which would exist in ME with or without alcohol and no program of recovery.
Also with Rob - alcohol abuse is what got me into recovery and living the wonderful life I do today - I would not take that opportunity away from anyone in future.
And lastly - ISM is the problem - not the alcohol! I say let the people without allergies enjoy it why not?

What a dangerous thing to say.:wtf2
Do you know that marijuana IS the most dangerous of all? Did you know that drug induced psychosis is most often linked to THIS drug. Did you know that it is devious and destroys so many lives because of attitudes like yours?
Do you know anyone who has been destroyed by marijuana? I do. Check out a Marijuana Anonymous meeting and educate yourself.
A drug is a drug is a drug - but marijuana is up there with the worst of them. FACT.

[QUOTE=Cathy31;2265130] Cannabis is one of the most benign substances known to humanity. FACT. Sorry some people you have known have experienced such problems with this substance. Truly. However, this goes to the heart of my argument: if you really believe "a drug is a drug is a drug," let's put our money where our mouths are. Make alcohol a Schedule 2 drug and tobacco a Schedule 1 drug. They are dangerous, addictive, and cause endless misery. Otherwise, we're nothing more than hypocrites. You may be ok with that, but i walk the walk, not just talk the talk.
