"Though there is no way of proving it, we believe that early in our
drinking careers most of us could have stopped drinking. But the
difficulty is that few alcoholics have enough desire to stop while
there is yet time."
Alcoholics Anonymous, 1st. Edition,
More About Alcoholism, pg. 32

if i'm understanding it clearly, i think this bb quote is a theoretical commentary on the allergy and progression of the disease. it implies that if we stopped soon enough, (impossible for this alcoholic!) then we would not have become full blown hopeless alcoholics.
i doubt that, early in my drinking, i could have stopped. fact is, i did not stop early on, so its really not a theory for me.
so i guesss that supports the reality for this alcoholic: signs were there early on that i should not drink, but i did not heed them.
only when i'd had enough, alcohol and pain, a point in time that was accompanied by desparation prior to the willingness to change, did i stop.
